Description
Upshur County is a county located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas. The county seat is Gilmer. The county is named for Abel P. Upshur, who was U.S. Secretary of State during President John Tyler's administration. The current building was build in 1933, the original courthouse burnt down in November 25, 1888.
The architect, Elmer G. Withers, incorporated some of the same architectural features, such as the stepped massing and triple-arched entrance, seen in the 1932 Young County courthouse which he also designed.
Upshur County is part of the Longview, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area, as well as the Longview–Marshall, TX Combined Statistical Area.
