Description
This image was captured with a Nikon camera and lens. I removed the color and added a sketch overlay to bring focus on the single bull getting ready to lay down.
The Texas Longhorn is a breed of cattle known for its characteristic horns, which can extend to over 1.8 m tip to tip for bulls, and up to 100 in tip to tip for steers and exceptional cows. The longhorn with the longest recorded horn total horn length marks in at 129.5 in and belongs to longhorn M Arrow Cha-Ching.
Twelve facts:
1. Their population plummeted near to extinction in the 1920s. It took guidance from the United States government to increase their numbers.
2. Both male Longhorn bulls and female cows have horns.
3. They are not related to the English Longhorn. And they don’t look anything like them, either. Sometimes they are mistaken for Watusi cattle though.
4. The cattle traveled from Spain to the West Indies and then Mexico before arriving in Texas and the rest of the USA.
5. The Longhorn didn’t become the Texas state large mammal until 1995.
6. They come in all colors and patterns, including spotted.
7. The hardy breed was used to travel long distances because, unlike other cattle, the animal could forage on brush and survive for days without water.
8. Known for their hardiness, Texas Longhorn calves stand quicker than other breeds.
9. Their horns are said to be exemplary of evolution’s natural selection.
10. Texas Longhorn cattle sales post-Civil War brought the state of Texas out of an economic depression.
11. The widest horn measurement spans over 10 feet.
12. The breed is also referred to as the American Longhorn.
