Description
The King's Mantle floral image was captured with a Nikon camera and lens with a painterly overlay added.
There are two types of bush thunbergia grown in Hawaii. The more common is king’s mantle (Thunbergia erecta) and the less common is Thunbergia affinis, sometimes called bush clockvine. They are native to tropical Africa. The genus Thunbergia commemorates Carl Thunberg, an 18th century Swedish botanist and plant collector who specialized in African and Japanese plants.
Both bush thunbergia grow as dense shrubs. Thunbergia erecta grows to as much as 6 feet tall and is usually a moderately narrow bush, fairly cylindrical in shape. Thunbergia affinis grows to about 4 feet tall and has a more mounded or conical shape. The bush thunbergias have leaves that are arranged in an opposite pattern (two leaves per node). The leaves are simple and almond-shaped. The leaves are dark green and from a little under 1 to 3 inches long and half as wide. The leaves are fairly close together on slender branches, giving the bush a very dense appearance. The side branches tend to drape over themselves, adding to the density of the bush.
